AFCON 2025: What can we expect from Uganda?

Pulse Sports Team 13:45 - 27.01.2025

Late last year, Uganda managed to seal their return to the Africa Cup of Nations and will compete in Morocco later this year.

They secured their place in the competition on November 14, after South Sudan - who have several players in the Uganda Premier League - defeated Congo 3-2. Now, while they are in the midst of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification, they know they will be involved in at least one major football tournament.

It has excited much of the country’s population about what is to come. They are football enthusiasts, and with betting opportunities available, there are many who like to combine the two activities to ensure they get the best experiences possible. With the availability of a Gal Sport promo code, punters can already consider the bets that they may want to make or place wagers on football happening in other top leagues worldwide, such as the English Premier League.

Of course, while it is still very early days with the competition not scheduled to take place until the end of the year (Sun, 21 Dec 2025 – Sun, 18 Jan 2026), now could be a good time as any to question what we might be able to expect from The Cranes.

What should we expect to see from Uganda at AFCON 2025?

It will be the first appearance in six years when they take to the field in AFCON 2025, having last played in the 2019 edition of the tournament. In that edition, they had managed to reach the Round of 16, after they qualified in second place from Group A.

They had managed to record a 2-0 win in their opening game against DR Congo before a draw against Zimbabwe was enough to secure their place in the next round. They finished Group A with a defeat to hosts Egypt. In the Round of 16, they came unstuck by Senegal, losing 1-0.

It was their best tournament showing for a while. In 2017, they failed to win a game and didn’t qualify from the group. Their last appearance before that was their best-ever, as they finished runners-up in 1978 after winning three of their five games played. The win against DR Congo in 2019 was the first time they had won a game since then.

The 2027 AFCON competition is one they can look forward to as they have qualified automatically as a joint host. However, many will want to see a solid performance by The Cranes in the upcoming edition ahead of the one that arrives to their homeland.

Uganda have been performing well as of recently, having put together some strong results. They have won their last three in a row, and will be placed in Pot 3 of the 2025 AFCON draw. This could give them a chance of securing a return to the latter stages of the tournament, but only if they are able to keep their displays at the levels that they have been enjoying.

They will play several games between now and then, including 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mozambique, Guinea, Somalia, Botswana, and Algeria. Strong performances in these can be the catalyst to a successful 2025 AFCON.
