Ugandan star Allan Okello has explained how his new team Yanga can bring down Egyptian giants Al Ahly when the two sides clash in a CAF Champions League match on Friday.

Ugandan playmaker Allan Okello has spoken of his confidence in his new team Yanga downing Egyptian giants Al Ahly in their CAF Champions League clash on Friday.

Yanga visit Al Ahly in their third Champions League group stage match with the tie set to be played in Cairo from 7pm (East African time) and while the Tanzanian giants have a poor record against the Egyptians, Okello is unfazed.

“We just need to give 100 or 200 per cent to get the maximum points but hopefully, we get the result we want,” Okello told Azam TV on Thursday after Yanga arrived in Cairo.

Al Ahly are the record African champions, having won 12 Champions League crowns, while Yanga are still looking for their first-ever.

On head-to-head, the North African side have beaten Yanga five times in their eight meetings with just one win for the Tanzanian giants, two ending in draws.

What Is Giving Okello Confidence?

That record includes a 1-0 win for Al Ahly when the two teams last met in March 2024 but Okello feels history alone cannot decide the outcome of the high stakes match.

“[Al Ahly] one of the best teams in Africa but nowadays, football is a game of margins. It depends on which kind of players you have, which we really have quality players,” he added.

“Whoever takes their chances tomorrow [Friday], defend well and play offensively well, you never know what comes. Football is a game of mistakes, we just need to reduce our mistakes, so hopefully, they [Al Ahly] will make mistakes and we utilise them and get the points we need.”

Both teams head into the match tied on four points after Yanga beat FAR Rabat 1-0 before a goalless draw with Kabylie while Al Ahly thrashed the Algerian side 4-1 and followed it up with a 1-1 draw against the Moroccan club last November.

Okello made his debut in Yanga’s 6-0 thrashing of Mashujaa in a league match on Monday and showed flashes of brilliance that will be needed plus much more in Friday’s contest.
