Allan Okello and his Yanga teammates are counting losses, having been promised a big bonus had they sealed a CAF Champions League quarter-final ticket.
Uganda Cranes starboy Allan Okello will miss out on a massive bonus following his club Yanga’s elimination from the CAF Champions League on Sunday.
Yanga beat Algerian side JS Kabylie 3-0 on Sunday but it was not enough as they missed out on a place in the quarter-final by just a point after finishing third in Group B with eight points.
This means the players will not be getting a big bonus that they had been promised had they made it to the quarter-final.
The Tanzanian giants had offered a massive financial incentive to their players ahead of the match against Kabylie with a bonus of $450,000 (UGX1.6 billion) if they could secure a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Sources within the club confirmed to The Citizen that the team had pledged to distribute half of the $900,000 (UGX3.81 billion) prize money awarded by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to the squad if they secured passage.
Tough and Challenging Qualification Path
However, the path to the next round for Yanga was narrow and challenging. They needed to defeat JS Kabylie by a margin of at least three goals while also hoping that Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly secures a 1-0 victory over Morocco’s ASFAR in Cairo. A draw in the Al Ahly-ASFAR match would eliminate Yanga, regardless of their own result.
That is what unfolded as while Yanga did their job, Al Ahly played out a goalless draw in an ill-tempered match that was marred with fan unrest, knocking Yanga out.
It means Okello and his teammates will now not get the big-money reward which would have been a massive source of motivation.
