Andy Cole has given his verdict on Manchester United’s chances of winning the Premier League saying they are not equipped enough to win it.

Manchester United finished the 2022/2023 season in fourth position behind Newcastle United and are currently looking to bring in quality signings to challenge for the title ahead of next season.

The Red Devils who were defeated by their arch-rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final are currently active in the transfer window and have been linked with moves for Tottenham striker Kane, West Ham midfielder Rice and Chelsea’s midfielder Mount.

Cole has warned that regardless of how much they spend on these three players in the transfer window, he does not see Erik Ten Hag’s side winning the Premier League next season.

Cole says two players not enough

Cole, a member of the Treble-winning team and a five-time Premier League champion, is sure that even the pair would not be sufficient for United to unseat City.

Cole, speaking on behalf of BoyleSports about Champions League Winner Odds, said, “If Harry Kane wants to leave Tottenham and United wants to spend £80m+ on a 29-year-old, soon to be 30, then that's entirely up to them.

“For me, United have to make up their mind whether they want to go for more senior players like Casemiro so they can bring success quicker, or they can build for the future. If you buy Kane, you need to replace him in two years' time.

“United have been doing that for too long now since Robin van Persie came in for two years. Look at City when they bought Erling Haaland at 22 years old, they can keep him for five years and then sell him for a profit while getting the best out of him.”

“The instant success route of the transfer strategy will catch up with you eventually because you'll need to replace those older players.

“If United buy Kane and someone like Declan Rice, they still wouldn't be able to win the league anyway because the point gap between City is too big.”

Kane tops United's shortlist

Kane is at the top of United's shortlist, according to a Mail Sport report in April, as manager Erik ten Hag is desperate to sign a new attacker to address his team's lack of offensive potential.

The Englishman may cost around £100 million and Real Madrid are also said to be monitoring his situation after Karim Benzema left the club.

Declan Rice is also among the names that United are looking to sign having been linked with a move to Arsenal.

According to Cole, he said, “Two players can improve your team, but they won't make you overtake City. Everyone was talking about Arsenal winning the league this season and they folded because City are the better team and have the better squad.”

Cole has made it clear that United needs more than two quality players to match the level Man City are and can not win the title with just two big-name signings.
