National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel has hit back at Ugandans for making comparisons between the country and Morocco.

National Council of Sports (NCS) General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel has dismissed comparisons being made between Uganda and Morocco.

Uganda is set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Tanzania but there are concerns on whether they can match the standards of Morocco who staged AFCON 2025 in impressive fashion.

Morocco showcased world class stadiums, infrastructure and accommodation facilities while the security was tight, leaving Uganda and its East African neighbours facing questions on whether they can match that standard.

Ogwel Hits Back at Ugandans

However, Ogwel feels it is unfair to make such comparisons given the investment Morocco has put in over a long time as they look towards co-hosting the 2034 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

“I have been to Morocco, I thank the government but if you might have noticed, the investment of the Moroccan government was for 30 years and among which they were aiming to host the World Cup,” he told the media.

“If you ask me the volume of government budget on sports infrastructure overall in Morocco is $16 billion that is stretched over a long period of time.

“And for them as a government, they are using football to bring national development, tourism and all other issues of national development.”

Uganda Has Different Ambitions

Ogwel says the ambition for Uganda is so different and therefore informed the kind of investment the country has put in so far.

“Meanwhile, here, our focus basically was to host AFCON 2027 and there is a big difference in the ambition of the two countries,” he added.

“Nevertheless, our government has committed funds and all the projects we have undertaken, we are undertaking feasibility study and the reports are out in favour of the government undertaking these development programmes.”

The Mandela National Stadium and Hoima Stadium are the two venues that Uganda plans to use for AFCON 2027.
