President Yoweri Museveni has, for the first time, given a lengthy update on the East African joint bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The bid dubbed the ‘Pamoja Bid, ’ is competing against Algeria, Egypt and Botswana.

The president made the statements during his state-of-the-nation address on Wednesday at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

Museveni noted government's progress since 1986 and stated that now that the country is enjoying political and economic stability, the government will shift focus to sports.

“With a bit more revenues that we have now, we shall focus deliberately on sports by building more stadiums and training facilities,” the president said amid cheers from a section of his audience present.

The president used the National High-Altitude Centre in Teryet as an example of what the government can do.

“It is good that the high-altitude training Centre at Teryet is now finished; these are just endoozo (trial).

Museveni said as he joked about the tradition in Western and Uganda at large of tasting alcohol’s quality before buying.

The Minister of State for Education and Sports, Peter Ogwang, reported that the facility was 95 percent complete.

He noted that the economy has broadened and that there are funds that can be channelled to the AFCON project and sports in general.

“With our broad economy, we shall do much more for sports; it is good that the East African Countries put together a bid for AFCON - the continental football competition of 2027.

“Apart from Namboole and Nakivubo, we need more world-class stadiums to be built. It does not matter whether they’re government or private as long as they are in Uganda,” he explained.

During his other programs, President Museveni outlined plans to construct roads and several airports and strips that could also be strategic to the AFCON bid if it goes through.

However, sports was not mentioned in the outline of the 11 important programs that the government was going to focus on in the next financial year.

It remains to be seen how much resources will be allocated for the project in the next budget that will be read next Thursday, 15th June.
