Joshua Cheptegei’s presence at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon has organisers eyeing record times, piling pressure on the Olympic champion.

All eyes will be on Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon scheduled for Sunday, 24 August.

Joshua Cheptegei will be headlining the event, and the race organisers have already set their targets for the event, relying on Joshua Cheptegei’s talent.

Joshua Cheptegei is a high-profile athlete who has already set the pace for Ugandan athletes to shine, having won gold in the 10,000m at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, setting a new Olympic record in the process. He also holds records in the 5000m and 10,000m.

Race director James McIlroy pointed out that the presence of Joshua Cheptegei in the race is proof that the Antrim Coast Half Marathon is high-profile.

James McIlroy noted that with Joshua Cheptegei in the mix, they are expecting a faster race, and hopefully, some records will fall.

He added that they have always been working around the clock to have Joshua Cheptegei in the mix, but other events stood in their way; he was elated to finally have him join the elite field.

"To have the reigning double Olympic champion and double world record holder headline a very fast race, we believe it to be the fastest in the world, it's going to be fantastic," James McIlroy told BBC Sport.

"This isn't the first conversation we've had on it. He was going to come for a couple of years, but the diary had to suit timing-wise. Obviously, the Olympic Games last year, in which he was retaining his title, didn't help us for 2024.”

McIlroy said he expected other big names to sign up for this year's event but acknowledged that Joshua Cheptegei would be the main attraction.

He added that they knew Joshua Cheptegei was bringing two pacemakers and had admitted he planned to run a very fast time.

McIlroy also pointed out that Cheptegei had competed in two half marathons over the past two years, one in New York City and another in New Delhi, both of which were massive races, and said it was fantastic to be mentioned in the same breath as those events.
