Halimah Nakaayi and Peruth Chemutai’s hopes for redemption in the 800m and 3000m steeplechase races at the Weltklasse Diamond League in Zurich remained unfulfilled.

Nakaayi entered the Letzigrund stadium with a mission to reclaim her stride after falling short at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last week.

Having achieved a sub-two-minute feat at both the Monaco Diamond League and the World Championships, Nakaayi's journey in Zurich proved challenging, as she finished seventh.

The fierce competition and swift pace of the race demanded nothing short of excellence, leaving Nakaayi with a time of 2:01.25.

Her aspirations for were tested in the face of strong contenders. The 800m race was won by Muir Laura, who clinched victory with a season-best time of 1:57.71.

French athlete Bisset Catriona secured second spot, while Jamaican Tracy Adelle finished third.

In the 3000m steeplechase, Chemutai's performance echoed the resilience of an athlete determined to conquer challenges.

However, the Zurich meet proved to be another chapter in the struggles she has encountered recently.

Despite her status as an Olympic champion and her previous triumphs, Chemutai finished the race in the tenth position. Her time of 9:23.79, was13 seconds away from her season best of 9:10.26.

The steeplechase event was dominated by Bahrain's Winfred Yavi, who not only secured the victory but also demonstrated her consistency as a formidable athlete.

Yavi's triumph was reminiscent of her recent gold medal win at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, where she had outpaced the competition to claim the top honour.

Yavi, a 23-year-old former Kenyan, beat Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech, the 2019 world champion, who was timed in 9:03.70.

Kenya’s Faith Cherotich –who is only 19 years old and looks even younger– got the bronze in a personal best of 9:07.59.
