Uganda’s steeplechase queen Peruth Chemutai displayed signs of a return to her brilliant best following her second-place finish at Paris Diamond League on Friday.

Uganda’s former Olympics champion Peruth Chemutai is showing great promise following a good outing at the Paris Diamond League on Friday.

In what was her third 3,000m steeplechase race of the season, Chemutai managed an impressive second place behind Kenya’s Faith Cherotich.

Cherotich, who Chemutai beat to Olympics silver in Paris last year, became the sixth-fastest women’s 3,000m steeplechaser in history as she held off the Ugandan to win in 8:53.37.

Chemutai nearly won the race as she was in the lead heading into the final two hurdles but Cheroich did just enough to claim victory, kicking away to win by a second, a world-leading 8:53.37 to Chemutai’s 8:54.41.

It was a good outing nonetheless for Chemutai who came into the race off a win at the BFK Games in the Netherlands on June 9 when he clocked a much slower time of 9:07.71.

Her time in Paris was therefore a great improvement and it shows how she is building her confidence for the season.

Chemutai’s opening race of the season was a nightmare as she finished seventh at the Rabat Diamond League in May, having clocked 9:15.55, but in just the third outing, she has dipped under 8:55.

Her personal best remains 8:48.03, recorded in Rome last August, and she will be hoping to get closer to those heights around the same time again this year with the World Championships in Tokyo in September in her sights.
