Kenya skipper Sharon Juma called a few players and officials aside in a small meeting.
She was calling it quits as an active player with the national team and felt those were the most important people to tell before making it public.
Moments later, players from Kenya and Uganda gave her a guard of honour with the Kenyan national anthem playing and unavoidable tears rolling down the faces of players and officials from both teams.
“I have played cricket for over ten years, and it is my number one sport,” Juma said in her final speech as Kenya's captain.
“It has built my character and given me discipline in life as well; I hope it does the same to you guys. I love you all. I will keep supporting you.”
“To Uganda, a team we have played cricket with more ,than another country and all the other teams, keep cricket in your heart and enjoy it as well,” Juma added while fighting back the tears in vain.
Juma, who has been wicket-keeping for Kenya has played a total of 37 Women T20 Internationals, managing 422 runs (88 runs short of a T20I career milestone) in the process. Forty seven of those were boundaries and one six at a strike rate of 87.83%
Juma, who was named captain in December 2022 also leaves with seven catches and eight stumpings. She run traffic in five games as national skipper.
