Fernandes has managed 57 goals and 50 assists in 166 appearances since joining the club in January 2020.

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton questioned Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes' body language during the Red Devil's 7-0 humiliation by Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Sutton suggested that the armband should be worn by either Casemiro or Raphael Varane but not the Portuguese in the absence of captain Harry Maguire.

"However bad United were, you cannot just let someone run away from you and give up," Sutton criticized Fernandes' gesture when Stefan Bajcetic ran past him.

"That is what the captain of Manchester United did - and that is a bad look. However, that was a standout moment on Sunday," he noted while speaking on BBC 5 Live's Monday Night Club.

Fernandes is one of the most influential players at Manchester United, but according to Sutton, there are better leaders than him in the team.

"I do not think he has any real arguments if he does get stripped of the captaincy. I think Bruno's days have to be numbered."

"Fernandes is not their best leader. Some people are far better qualified to be captain, like Casemiro and Varane."

Sutton added: "I think Fernandes should never put on the armband again for Manchester United."

During the second half of the game, the Portuguese was filmed handling the linesman, but the FA will not punish him further.

Despite the 28-year-old always facing difficulty when United is on the wrong side of the game, his numbers are remarkable.

Fernandes has managed 57 goals and 50 assists in 166 appearances since joining the club in January 2020.
