A repeat of last year’s third-place playoff in this year’s semifinals
Uganda Christian University (UCU) and Makerere University Business School (MUBS) will renew their rivalry in the semifinals of this year’s Pepsi University Football League.
Both teams reached last year’s semifinals but could not proceed to the final after losing to eventual champions Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) and runners up St. Lawrence University (SLAU), respectively.
They faced off in the third-place playoff final with UCU defeating MUBS in post match penalties following a draw in normal time.
The Nakawa-based institution and their counterparts from Mukono have been presented with yet another opportunity to go head to head in the semifinals with a slot in the final at stake.
En route to the semifinals, MUBS eliminated Bugema University 1-0 on aggregate while UCU dumped out Makerere University (MUK) on away rules following a 2-2 aggregate score.
In the other semifinal, SLAU will meet Nkumba University in what will be a repeat of a contest from Group E where each side defeated the other 3-1 in their own territories.
SLAU ejected two-time champions Kampala University (KU) 5-2 on aggregate whereas Nkumba saw off the holder UMU 2-1 on aggregate.
Nkumba is the only team that did not reach this stage last year amongst this edition’s semifinalists.
SLAU and Nkumba are yet to win the tournament with the former losing the previous two finals.
UCU are one-time winners in 2019 whilst MUBS are two-time champions having won it consecutively in 2014 and 2015.
The first legs will be played next week with MUBS hosting UCU in Nakawa on Tuesday while Nkumba will visit SLAU on Thursday in Kavule.
