Adel Amrouche returns to East Africa for new challenge – Can he succeed again?

Belgian tactician Adel Amrouche has been officially appointed as the new head coach of Rwanda’s national football team, Amavubi. 

The 56-year-old coach takes charge of the team with a wealth of experience across African football, having previously managed Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea, and Libya.

Amrouche’s appointment signals Rwanda’s intent to elevate its footballing standards, given his strong track record of guiding teams through crucial qualification campaigns and competitive tournaments.

His first major test will against  Nigeria on March 17 and Lesotho also on March 24 at Amahoro Stadium in a 2026 World Cup qualifying game.

Amrouche is no stranger to African football. His tenure with Kenya’s Harambee Stars is fondly remembered for winning the 2013 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Nairobi and orchestrating a commendable 1-1 draw against Nigeria in a 2014 World Cup qualifier held in Calabar.

Aside from his success in East Africa, Amrouche has coached in North Africa and Central Africa, leading clubs like USM Alger (Algeria) and DC Motema Pembe (DR Congo). His ability to adapt to different footballing cultures has made him a sought-after coach in the continent.

Holding a CAF A License and a UEFA Pro License, Amrouche brings top-level tactical expertise to Rwanda. 

His career path suggests that he prioritizes long-term projects over quick results, a quality that could prove valuable for a nation eager to establish itself as a force in African football.

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) confirmed that Amrouche will be assisted by Eric Nshimiyimana as the first assistant coach, while Dr. Carolin Braun will serve as the second assistant coach. 

The trio will be expected to revitalize Rwanda’s football scene and enhance the team’s competitiveness on the continental stage.
