Alianza: 12 people killed, many more injured in stadium stampede

Salvadoran Football Federation has slapped a one-year stadium ban and a fine of $30, 000 on Alianza football club.

The punishment followed an ugly stampede that claimed 12 lives and injured more during a league game at the weekend.

According to Reuters, the stampede took place during the club’s encounter against Club Deportivo FAS on Saturday.

As per the report, both teams were battling in the second leg of their playoff in the quarterfinals at the nation’s capital before play was suspended following a stampede.

The all-important tie was played at the Cuscathan Stadium, an over 40, 000-seater stadium, in the city of El Salvador.

The visitors Deportivo have been awarded a 2-0 win, with the club advancing to the semifinal of the competition.

Alianza on the other hand have been fined over ₦22 million and asked to play their home games in an empty stadium for the next 12 months.

The country’s President Nayib Bukele has also added his voice, with a directive for a further investigation by the National Police and the Attorney General.

Alianza’s stampede at the weekend is the latest of such ugly incidents after the one in Indonesia that claimed 135 lives.
