‘An amazing leader’ - Osimhen hails Ekong despite criticism from fans

The team captain has had his minutes reduced in the national team following his poor form in recent games.

The centre-back was an unused substitute against Rwanda during the September international window and was taken off at halftime against South Africa after scoring an own goal.

However, the 32-year-old made a strong return to the lineup against Lesotho in Polokwane, scoring a penalty, but was left on the bench against Benin Republic.

Osimhen took to social media to acknowledge his teammates, singling out the captain for special recognition.

"An amazing leader on and off the pitch. You've always been there for each and every one of your teammates. Thank you, skippo," Osimhen wrote in an Instagram story dedicated to Troost-Ekong.

With Nigeria's 4-0 triumph over Benin, South Africa clinched their spot at the 2026 World Cup playoffs. 

In other news, Sunday Oliseh has issued a stern warning to Eric Chelle, insisting that the current skipper, William Troost-Ekong, must be dropped from the starting lineup for the upcoming playoffs.

Oliseh has expressed concerns that the player is past his peak and should be dropped from the Super Eagles team.
