With just a few group games remaining, the upcoming encounter against Bafana Bafana could be decisive for Nigeria’s hopes of securing a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking ahead of the important fixture, Troost-Ekong acknowledged the quality of the South African squad, describing them as “a very good team.”

However, he also delivered a clear message of confidence and determination, stating, “We are working hard and we will be ready for it.” His remarks shows the Super Eagles’ focus and commitment to rising to the challenge when facing the group leaders on their home turf.

In a related development, Troost-Ekong also defended goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who faced criticism following Nigeria’s narrow win over Rwanda.

Nwabali was in goal for the full match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, helping Nigeria secure three vital points with a clean sheet.

Despite some contentious moments and social media backlash, Troost-Ekong emphasised Nwabali’s importance to the team, insisting that Nigeria cannot do without their trusted shot-stopper.

As the team prepares for the do-or-die clash against South Africa, both players are expected to play key roles in Nigeria’s pursuit of World Cup qualification.
