Xavi Hernandez's team toiled for a goal as they sought to keep pace with Real Madrid before next week's El Clasico. They eventually got a goal from an unlikely source, 17-year-old Guiu who came on for his debut moments before scoring

How it happened

Xavi Hernandez named an almost second-string side against the Basque team due to Barcelona’s injury problems, but they showed quality in the early exchanges, creating a number of chances, including crashing the crossbar from a Joao Felix shot.

The Blaugrana pressed high but failed to break the deadlock in the first-half; on the other hand, on the field, Marc Andre Ter Stegen’s heroics and a strong showing from Inigo Martinez against his old team kept the Blaugrana in the game.

Xavi shuffled the pack in the second-half, bringing on young Lamine Yamal, and later in the game, for his debut, Marc Guiu.

The 17-year-old eventually broke the deadlock, running onto a through ball from Joao Felix before firing the ball past Unai Simon. The striker’s goal was the only one in the game and earned Barcelona maximum points.
