Burundian side bolster squad with signing of Kenyan duo

Burundian side Buja Queens have made strategic moves to fortify their squad ahead of the CAF Women's Champions League qualifiers, set to kick off in Uganda from Saturday 12 to Thursday 24 August.

The club announced the acquisition of Kenyan duo, goalkeeper Monica Karambu and midfielder Lydia Waganda, both highly regarded players in the Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League (FKFWPL).

Karambu, formerly of Thika Queens, brings her goalkeeping prowess and experience to Buja Queens.

On the other hand, Lydia Waganda, who previously showcased her skills at Gaspo Women, joins Buja Queens as a creative force in midfield.

"We continue to build a more international team with Lydia and Monica," the club proudly proclaimed on their social media platforms.

The duo joins five other Kenyan players who have already been part of the Buja Queens team: Elizabeth Wambui, Rachael Muema, Diana Wachera, Corazone Aquino, and Topister Situma.

Sources reveal that Monica, Lydia, and the other Kenyan players have joined Buja Queens on short-term loan deals to bolster the squad specifically for the upcoming qualifiers.

Buja Queens have been drawn into Pool A, where they will face tough competition from other East African powerhouses Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC, FAD FC from Djibouti, Kampala Queens from Uganda, and Yei Joint Stars from South Sudan.

Pool B, meanwhile, features the likes of Kenyan champions Vihiga Queens, Tanzanian side JKT Queens, Rwanda's AS Kigali Women, and New Generation FC from Zanzibar.

The top two finishers from each pool will meet in the semifinals, setting the stage for high-stakes clashes and thrilling encounters.

Last year's CAF  Women's Champions League title was claimed by Moroccan side AS FAR, who emerged victorious in the 2022 edition of the competition.
