Denis Onyango Three Games Away from Historic Milestone in South Africa
Uganda Cranes veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango is close to writing a new chapter of his decorated career as his club Mamelodi Sundowns closes in on another league title.
Sundowns beat Polokwane City 3-0 on Sunday to open up a five-point gap between them and second-placed Orlando Pirates, although the latter have a game in hand.
However, even if Pirates win their game in hand against Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday, Sundowns would still have a two-point lead with three games remaining, meaning what they need is to win all of them to be crowned.
SuperSport Spell Set the Tone
Sundowns have been untouchable in South Africa in the last decade, winning the last eight Premier Soccer League (PSL) titles in a row and a ninth one is in the offing if they maintain their lead.
That would see Onyango claim yet another piece of silverware which will extend his record as the most decorated player in South African football.
Onyango joined Sundowns in 2011 from Mpumalanga Black Aces, having previously spent four seasons at the now defunct SuperSport United, where he won three straight titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Most Decorated Player in South Africa
At Sundowns, he has won nine PSL titles in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, taking his tally to 12 and remains the only player to have hit that milestone as the second most decorated player is his teammate Themba Zwane, who has nine.
Winning a 13th title would therefore extend Onyango’s record and it hard to see anyone else breaking it soon given Zwane is in the twilight years of his career.
Onyango, who will turn 41 on May 15, has benefited from his loyalty to Sundowns, professionalism and discipline in the game to still be going strong at his age although coach Miguel Cardoso is now using him sparingly this season where he had made just four appearances, one in the league.
However, having made the squad in nearly all games, he is eligible for a league winner’s medal and more could be on the way as Sundowns are in the CAF Champions League final.
