Eliud Kipchoge Reveals Key Inspiration Behind ‘World Tour’ After Conquering Marathon Majors
Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has opened up about what is behind his push to run for a course and not retire as some have been suggesting to him.
The two-time Olympics champion completed his historic feat of running all seven Marathon Majors in New York early this month and announced that he will now embark on a ‘World Tour,’ running marathons across seven continents “to serve humanity and preach the gospel of running.”
In what he has termed transition and not retirement, Kipchoge has revealed that he got the push to do this after reading a book titled The Second Mountain, authored by Canadian-American David Brook.
“I am reading a book called The Second Mountain,” Kipchoge told The Athletic. “It is about a human tendency to pursue personal achievements (the first mountain), before realising that more joy and happiness can be found in something deeper, more societal and altruistic.”
“I want to put the knowledge I’m getting into the world tour. That is my second mountain,” he added about his soon-to-start World Tour.
Kipchoge Keen to Ensure Affordable Education
Part of what is inspiring Kipchoge to run across the world is a need to make a change in the society with his tours aimed at raising funds to support a number of initiatives through his Eliud Kipchoge Foundation.
The foundation focuses on three pillars; environmental conservation, education and health which are close to his heart.
“I want to make education affordable in Kenya, to build a lot of libraries here,” added Kipchoge, who already has the Eliud Kipchoge Library in Kapsisywa, Nandi County built in 2022.
“In the future, I want to build a library in every capital city in Africa. I want to make Africa, as far as education, go high. I want to conserve the environment, to plant trees around Kenya, (then) expand to East Africa, to Central Africa, and all of Africa.”
For a man who has run 21 marathon majors, won 11 and broke two world records, Kipchoge will be counting on his determination to bring him success in the next chapter of his storied career.
