With big tournaments and mounting pressure on the horizon, Chelle is clear on the kind of player that fits into his squad.

No room for passengers

Chelle, who took charge in January, has already had to answer questions about his player selection. But he’s putting the rumours and speculations to bed with a clear message: it’s merit or nothing.

“First of all, you need to have playing time. You need to be in top physical shape and you need to be good too,” he said.

This comes as a firm response to the age-old complaints about nepotism and favouritism in call-ups. He wants players who are fit, active, and performing, whether they’re based in Europe or playing locally.

His goal is to build a results-oriented squad, not a popularity contest. And with limited time on the training ground, there’s no luxury for half-fit hopefuls.

Tactical smarts and mental grit required

Beyond raw talent, Chelle is looking for players who can think and execute at speed to make up his Super Eagles squads.

Eric Chelle replaced Finidi George.

“Physically, the player has to be in shape. He also has to be tactically intelligent to be ready to understand and apply my instructions,” he stated.

In a national team setup where training time is limited, tactical awareness and quick adaptation are crucial. Chelle adds, “Finally, you have to be mentally ready.”

The stakes are high, and the Franco-Malian tactician knows the Super Eagles can't afford passengers. The message is loud and clear: perform, think, adapt, and be ready to fight for the badge.
