EURO 2024: 19-goal Premier League striker becomes latest Super Eagles-eligible star dumped by European country
Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke has become the latest in a string of Nigeria-eligible stars that have been left out of their main country’s squads for the upcoming UEFA Championships in Germany.
Solanke left out of England squad
Despite becoming Bournemouth’s highest-ever scorer in a single Premier League campaign with 19 strikes during the 2023/24 campaign, Solanke was left out of England’s team for the Euros, failing to even make the preliminary squad.
In his place, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and Brentford star man Ivan Toney were selected to partner or deputise for Three Lions’ captain Harry Kane.
In addition to Solanke, another Nigeria-eligible star Tosin Adarabioyo was also left out of the squad for England.
Nigerians dumped by European teams
Solanke and Adarabioyo are only a handful of Nigerian players who have been left disappointed with the latest Euro 2024 squads.
Borussia Dortmund star Karim Adeyemi was also left out of the Germany squad, while Crystal Palace star Michael Olise was not considered good enough for a preliminary France squad despite impressing in the Premier League.
The lack of recognition by other countries has opened the doors for these players to consider a change in international allegiance, as they could all make decent careers with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
