Farouk Shikalo: How CHAN 2024 Transformed Kenyan Football and Why Gor Mahia Struck Gold with Byrne Omondi
Harambee Stars veteran goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo has offered deep reflections on the transformation of Kenyan football following the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), while praising Byrne Omondi’s resurgence and Benni McCarthy’s refreshing approach to coaching.
Speaking on the Tiki Taka Show, the experienced shot-stopper, who was part of Kenya’s CHAN 2024 campaign, revealed how the tournament has reshaped not only the national team’s fortunes but also the mentality of local players.
Byrne Omondi’s Redemption Story
Shikalo was full of praise for his national teammate Byrne Omondi, who recently joined Gor Mahia after an impressive run of form with Harambee Stars during CHAN 2024.
Omondi’s journey has been one of resilience — from battling injury setbacks at Bandari FC to rediscovering his best form on the continental stage.
“Byrne was suffering from a lot of injuries, but he is very mentally strong, and you saw how he performed at CHAN 2024,” Shikalo said.
“I believe Gor Mahia have landed themselves a good goalkeeper, and I believe he will have a very strong season.”
Shikalo, who has represented clubs in Kenya and Tanzania, knows what it takes to sustain consistency at the highest level. He believes Gor Mahia — the Kenyan champions — have made a wise investment in a goalkeeper who has proven his worth both mentally and technically.
How CHAN 2024 Redefined Kenyan Football
Reflecting on Kenya’s recent progress, Shikalo acknowledged that CHAN 2024 was a pivotal moment for both the players and the nation. For the first time in years, the local-based contingent received recognition and tangible reward for their efforts.
“In terms of finances, yes, but in terms of my career, I think I would differ because I enjoyed better times than this,” Shikalo noted.
“I have earned well over the years, but in terms of the national team, I think this is the first time we have been rewarded the way it almost deserves. President Ruto was the pillar, but teamwork and our coach were crucial.”
Shikalo credited the players’ unity and Benni McCarthy’s leadership for bringing renewed belief to the squad. He described the former South Africa striker as a “complete coach” who understands how to connect with his players on both personal and professional levels.
Benni McCarthy’s Winning Formula
Having played under numerous coaches throughout his career, Shikalo drew special attention to McCarthy’s balance of discipline, empathy, and motivation.
“You will die if you give yourself too much pressure. Most coaches today are bald-headed,” Shikalo joked.
“I believe there is a way you have to relate with your players. There is player motivation through harsh words, or through an arm around the shoulder, as well as money — all are motivation.
"Benni McCarthy was good at combining all three and it delivered results. He can be your friend, but he can give you a telling off if you do not do your job — not to discourage you, but to make you better, whether you are senior or junior. It is all about the team, not the individual with him.”
With CHAN 2024 serving as a turning point for Kenyan football, Shikalo believes that the lessons learned — particularly around teamwork, professionalism, and motivation — will set the stage for greater achievements ahead, especially as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
“God rewards what you do behind closed doors,” Shikalo concluded. “It’s not as easy as people think — it’s about how you live and survive with people.”
From his words, it’s clear that the spirit of Kenyan football is evolving — and with leaders like Shikalo, Omondi, and McCarthy driving the change, the Harambee Stars may finally be on the verge of something special.
