Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has explained why Harambee Stars must get as maximum points as possible from their remaining four group F games of the ongoing group F 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Kenya’s chances are slimmer than ever before. After six games, they sit fourth on six points, with Gabon leading on 18 points. Second placed Ivory Coast need only to win their next game to guarantee second place, which will all but rule Kenya out of qualification.

To Olunga, the focus is on the bigger picture though, as McCarthy continues building a squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Al Arabi striker believes that Stars’ winning all their four remaining games would improve their rankings, and strengthen their chances of getting more favorable opponents in future qualifiers.

“Looking at the recent results, we picked up a win, and technically, the maximum points we can achieve is 18,” Olunga said.

“In football, you never say never. We have to compete with everything we have because it’s both a responsibility and an honor to represent the nation. We want to fight hard until the last group game and hopefully reach the full 18 points, then see what happens.

“Beyond that, we’re also building a team for upcoming assignments. Our FIFA ranking matters too, so we must compete fairly and get results to secure a better position in future tournaments and classifications.”

Confidence Ahead of Gambia Clash

Ahead of Kenya’s next game against Gambia, Olunga expressed confidence that Harambee Stars have what it takes to secure all three points, especially with strong home support behind them.

“It’s going to be a good game—an interesting one as well. We’ve prepared well over the past two days. The training sessions have been strong, and the integration between the local and international players has been smooth. There’s good harmony in the camp, and we expect a tough opponent in Gambia.

“The coach already knew most of the players in the Kenyan Premier League. Playing at home gives us momentum, and after a successful CHAN tournament, we want to carry the same spirit forward and hopefully secure maximum points.”

McCarthy’s Impact on Harambee Stars

Olunga was also full of praise for McCarthy, who has been in charge since the start of the qualifiers.

“The coach has had a very positive impact, not only on the squad but also on football in the country. There’s a new sense of belief—not just among players, but also among key stakeholders—that the national team is heading in the right direction.

“The progress is clear, and the coach has instilled confidence in both international and local players. Now, every player feels valued and knows he can be trusted to step up and compete with any opponent.

“This belief is key because football is often about confidence, and that’s exactly what we’re getting from the coach. Tomorrow, we want to show the whole country that we are ready to fight against any opponent and deliver results.”

Despite the odds, Olunga insists Harambee Stars will push until the very end, determined to build a solid foundation for the future while chasing pride, points, and progress on the international stage.
