FIFAWWC: Netherlands' Oranje too bitter as Banyana Banyana book flight to South Africa
South Africa’s Women’s football team, the Banyana Banyana, are out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, FIFAWWC, in New Zealand and Australia.
The Banyana Banyana exited the tournament following a painful 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in the round of 16 on Sunday in Syndey.
South Africa vs Netherlands
The Africans came into the game buoyed by their historic run in Australia and hoped to open another chapter against the Netherlands.
But the Oranje proved just too good and strong for Banyana Banyana courtesy of a comfortable outing in the first phase of the knockout round.
The Netherlands took control of the encounter from start to finish and were rewarded with a goal in either half en route to a deserved win that earned them a ticket to the quarterfinal.
For South Africa, despite a positive start to the clash which saw they take the first shot in anger, it was not meant to be in the end as they booked a return ticket back home.
The African champions put up a fight against the solid Europeans and created some decent chances but were unable to find their way past the excellent Daphne van Domselaar in goal for the Oranje ladies.
South Africa crashes
Banyana Banyana became the first of the three history-making teams to crash out of the ongoing FIFAWWC.
South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco gifted Africa a first-ever trio in the knockout stage of the competition after a fairytale journey in the group stage.
However, after a gallant run, the ladies from the rainbow nation saw their brilliant run come to an end against dominant Oranje girls from the Netherlands.
Despite their defeat, South Africa exited the FIFAWWC with their pride intact having made it to the round of 16 for the first time.
