Uganda, the defending champions, got out of the blocks early, and Pius Ogena touched down in the opening minute to open the floodgates of tries.

Nobert Okeny, Aaron Ofoyrwoth, Adrian Kasito, Alex Aturinda (2) and Mubarak Wandera all touched down, while Philip Wokorach converted on six occasions to complete a perfect performance.

Algeria’s response came when the Cranes were down to six after Isaac Massanganzira was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle in the first half.

But there was no stopping Uganda, who still have to face Burkina Faso and hosts Zimbabwe in the other group games.

In the other Pool C match, Burkina Faso held Zimbabwe to a 12-12 stalemate, indicating that there will be no easy games for Uganda against the two sides.

Uganda won the title in Kampala last year and will be looking to defend it and book a ticket to the 2024 Olympics in France.

Tolbert Onyango’a charges will face Burkina Faso in their second game Saturday afternoon.
