George Kamurasi: South London Goalkeeper Set to Rule Ugandan Kingdom in Shock Career Twist

A non-league goalkeeper from South London is set to trade the football pitch for a throne after being chosen as the new king of a Ugandan kingdom.

George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, captain of Bexleyheath-based side SE Dons, has been named the successor to lead the Tooro people in the East African nation.

His unexpected ascension follows the death of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who previously held the title of omukama, or king.

Rukidi IV, who passed away on August 27 after a battle with cancer, had reigned over the subnational constitutional monarchy of approximately 800,000 people since 1995.

He made history as the world's youngest reigning monarch when he took the throne at just three years old. In his memory, Ugandan officials announced a plan to plant one million trees.

According to Ugandan media, a 21-member royal succession committee selected Kamurasi as the new king on Friday, with a formal declaration anticipated next week.

Ugandan author Cynthia Natkoto commented on the appointment, stating, "The new king Desmond Kamurasi looks like a strong mobiliser, no nonsense, aggressive. For the people of Tooro, that’s a good thing."

Kamurasi's place in the line of succession was established by the will of his grandfather, former Tooro king George Rukidi III. He was designated as second-in-line after his cousin.

However, there have been conflicting reports in Uganda regarding a potential secret heir left by Rukidi IV, who never married. The head of Tooro's royal clan has disputed this claim, asserting that the late king had no children.

Located in western Uganda, Tooro is one of the country's four remaining traditional kingdoms. The role of the omukama is primarily cultural and ceremonial rather than political.

Despite the royal calling, Kamurasi is reportedly hesitant to leave his life in the UK. On Saturday, he helped his team secure a 2-0 victory over Erith Town, advancing to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The SE Dons, who are making their debut in the competition this year, are scheduled to face Greenways in an away match next Saturday, the same day as Rukidi IV's planned funeral.
