Heathens beat Kobs to win Rujumba Sevens

Platinum Credit Heathens became the second team to win a Nile Special Sevens Series following a close 12-10 victory over Kobs in the Rujumba Sevens at Kings Park Arena on Sunday.

The Yellow Machine came from a try down to edge the tightly-contested game that will be remembered for a late call made by the referee.

Pius Ogena got the Blue Army ahead early in the game after touching down in the right-hand corner, but his try was cancelled out by a penalty try awarded to Heathens.

Lawrence Sebuliba would add another try for Heathens to lead 12-05 but substitute Karim Arinaitwe went over in the corner to cut the deficit to two points (12-10).

Kobs thought they would be awarded a late penalty try for a high tackle, but after consultations with his assistants, the referee adjudged Byron Oketayot to have knocked the ball forward before an onrushing Faragi Odugo took it.

From the resultant scrum down awarded, Heathens put it in and kicked out to win the game and the circuit.

Kobs defeated Pirates 12-10 in a classic semi-final, in which Ian Munyani scored a late try that Joseph Aredo converted to break the Sea Robbers’ hearts.

On their way to the final, Heathens defeated Plascon Mongers in the semis and Toyota Buffaloes in the quarters.

Table leaders Pirates defeated Mongers to settle for third place.
