The Blues went into Sunday’s game seeking a positive result to boost their Champions League prospects. 

Enzo Fernandez put Enzo Maresca’s men in front after three minutes and the hosts' advantage was doubled after Jarell Quansah's own goal before the hour mark.

While Virgil van Dijk halved the deficit with five minutes of the 90 remaining, Palmer scored his first goal since mid-January to seal a deserved victory for Maresca's team.

Palmer extols Caicedo

Although the England star claimed the man of the match award, Palmer lauded the contribution of Caicedo, asserting that the Ecuadorian has been Chelsea’s best performer this term.

"Today I felt confident, I was trying things, first time passes, playing forward,” said Palmer. “When you have got him [Moises Caicedo] in front of you, it's a dream. 

“From the start of the season, he has been our best player, he wins the ball back all the time, he's humble, nice to everyone and everyone loves him."

Commenting on the game, Palmer was pleased with the team’s intensity and motivation against the defending champions.

"They're champions for a reason but we showed good fight and desire,” continued the Chelsea star. “I just felt normal. 

“Obviously it happens, I went three months without scoring but it just gives me more fight and motivation to do more for myself and for the team.

“I’ve scored today and I'm happy but it's only one and I've got to keep improving and try and reach new levels.”

Sunday’s victory leaves Chelsea fifth in the table, level on points with Newcastle United, whom they face next week. 

What’s next for Chelsea?

Maresca’s men host Djurgarden on Thursday, seeking to hold on to their Conference League semi-final advantage, having won the first leg 4-1.
