‘His performance speaks volume’ - Eguavoen claims Lookman deserves to win CAF POTY award
The Nigerian international won the award during the ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco, defeating Ronwen Williams, Serhou Guirassy, and Achraf Hakimi.
His performance for club and country played a major role in his recognition, having helped Atalanta win their first European trophy and scoring a hat trick in the final.
He also led the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the final of the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast, scoring three goals in the competition.
Eguavoen hails Lookman
The current Super Eagles manager explained what makes Lookman unique after receiving congrats from the Nigerian football community.
According to Afrikaanspective, Eguavoen said, “You could see a maturity in his game. He didn’t just play for himself—he played for the team, and that’s what made him stand out.
“Ademola Lookman’s performance for both country and club speaks volumes. He rises to every occasion, either scoring or assisting, and always maintains a positive attitude.”
Eguavoen emphasised Lookman's goal contributions as a crucial factor in obtaining the award and commended his demeanour both on and off the pitch.
Lookman becomes the latest Nigerian football icon to win the CAF Player of the Year award, following in the footsteps of Kanu Nwankwo, Victor Ikpeba, Rashidi Yekini, and Victor Osimhen.
