NEC FC started life in the Startimes Uganda Premier League on a high following a 1-0 win over Mbarara City FC Friday evening at Kakyeka Stadium, Mbarara.

The two newly promoted sides were facing off for the third time in history, having played out draws in the FUFA Big League encounters last season.

And it was NEC who got off to a flying start, capitalizing on Mbarara City’s disorganization to pick up a huge away win.

With the Ankole Lions only allowed to host home games in Mbarara recently, it was an eagerly anticipated clash for the home fans, who endured a season in the Big League.

Kick-off was, however, delayed to sort the home team’s licensing issues first.

The home team only received their players’ licenses after the scheduled kick-off time, and that only worked to favour Hussein Mbalangu’s charges.

Right back Joseph Dhata’s header in the 51st minute turned out to be the winner as the visitors withered the storm in the second half.

Rashid Okocha delivered a precise cross that Dhata nodded into the back of the net to open NEC’s account in the top flight.

Wasswa Bossa and his charges will now be looking to bounce back when they face Express FC next Saturday.
