I couldn't refuse Nigeria: Eric Chelle bids emotional farewell to MC fans for Super Eagles job

Franco-Mali coach Eric Chelle has officially confirmed his departure from MC Oran to take the helm of Nigeria's national football team, the Super Eagles. 

Pulse Sports Nigeria can report this following an emotional farewell after leading his team to victory in a cup match against USM Setif on Saturday. 

The announcement comes as the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) appointed Chelle as the new permanent head coach to replace Finidi George, who resigned in June 2024 after a disappointing start to the World Cup qualifying campaign.

In his farewell address, Chelle expressed gratitude towards the fans and officials of MC Oran, stating, according to a post by OgaNla Media; 

"This is my last meeting with you and it marks the end of my adventure here. From Monday, I will be in Nigeria to start a new chapter." 

He acknowledged the club's attempts to retain him but emphasised that leading one of Africa's top teams was an opportunity he could not refuse. 

"The MC Oran officials insisted that I continue, but one cannot refuse to lead one of the best teams in Africa and the world,” he added, 

Chelle's appointment is a historic moment in Nigerian football history as he becomes the first non-Nigerian African to manage the Super Eagles. 

His immediate task will be to guide the team through crucial World Cup qualifiers starting in March, where they currently sit in a precarious position in their group after four matches. The NFF has entrusted him with securing a spot for Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.

Despite his successful stint with Mali, where he led them to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Chelle's appointment has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerian fans and analysts. 

Some critics have questioned the decision to hire the Malian coach over local talent, citing concerns about Chelle's credentials compared to experienced Nigerian coaches. 

Nonetheless, Chelle, renowned for his charisma and motivational skills, will be optimistic about his new role and determined to make a positive impact on Nigerian football.
