Italian Pundit praises Lookman for standing up to Atalanta and keeping Nigerian identity amidst Inter saga
Ademola Lookman’s transfer saga has taken a symbolic twist, earning him praise from top Italian football voices.
As Inter Milan circles and Atalanta digs in, Lookman’s actions have drawn the attention of Corriere dello Sport editor Ivan Zazzaroni.
Standing Firm in the Face of Rejection
Zazzaroni, a prominent voice in Italian football, highlighted Lookman's quiet but firm reaction after Atalanta rejected a €45 million offer from Inter Milan.
The Nigerian winger immediately removed all references to Atalanta from his Instagram profile, including the club description, profile photo, and any images tied to “La Dea.”
Zazzaroni interpreted this as a bold stand against what he views as a snub from Atalanta. He noted that Lookman chose to preserve only his Nigerian identity on the platform, signalling where his heart lies during the standoff.
The 27-year-old is reportedly frustrated by Atalanta’s refusal to negotiate, especially after a verbal agreement last summer supposedly promised him an exit around the €35–40 million mark.
Atalanta's silence leaves Inter confused
Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta initially believed Atalanta’s vague email responses were a sign of high valuation, but it soon became clear they were simply shutting the door.
The €45 million offer, €42 million plus €3 million in bonuses, was turned down with no counter, and a follow-up call with Atalanta president Antonio Percassi failed to clear things up.
Zazzaroni believes the Bergamo club is hesitant to weaken its squad after losing coach Gian Piero Gasperini and striker Mateo Retegui.
For Lookman, now nearing 28, time is ticking, and the public has seen the first clear signs that the breakup is already in motion, even if Atalanta refuses to admit it.
