It stayed that way until Onuachu finished from close range in the closing minutes of normal time to seal only their second triumph of 2024-25 and a first under Juric.

The Southampton boss praised Onuachu afterwards, stating that the towering striker can be even more prolific for the basement club.

"I'm sure he can score lots of goals," said the Saints boss to BBC Match of the Day. "He has the characteristics and he is really working hard. Great man."

Despite the success, Southampton's position remains precarious as eight points separate the 20th-placed club from Leicester in 18th and Wolves in 17th before the latter play Aston Villa in Saturday's tea-time fixture.
