Kanu Nwankwo and Stanley Nwabali: Papilo follows Super Eagles goalkeeper to parents burial
The Nigerian football community united in a powerful display of solidarity as football legend Kanu Nwankwo attended the burial of Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s parents.
The event a celebration for Nwabali, who has endured the heartbreaking loss of both parents—his mother and father—in recent months.
Kanu, affectionately known as "Papilo," shared a series of pictures on social media capturing the occasion.
Kanu follows Nwabali to burial
The pictures showcased Kanu and Nwabali, dressed in traditional Igbo attire for the ceremony.
The burial followed a series of rites outlined in earlier reports, with the final ceremonies held on June 7 and 8, 2025, as Nwabali’s parents—his father, who passed at 72, and his mother, Grace, at 63—were laid to rest.

Kanu posted a message with the photo that said, "In moments like these, we’re reminded of the importance of unity and support.
"My thoughts are with @NwabaliBobo and his family.

This comes after reports that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) demonstrated its support by providing Nwabali with 20 million naira to assist with burial arrangements.
