Kenya Lionesses Reveal What Gives Them Confidence of Dethroning South Africa for Rugby Africa Sevens Title
Kenya Lionesses players have expressed confidence of winning the Africa Sevens crown ahead of the Rugby Africa Women's Sevens 2025 that kicks off on Saturday.
The RFUEA grounds in Nairobi will be the place to be this weekend as the two-day event takes place on November 15 and 16 with Kenya among favourites to win the title alongside holders South Africa and Uganda.
Kenya are in Group B alongside Ghana and Ivory Coast and they remain confident of going past the pool and winning the title, buoyed by their recent good results against the South Africans.
"I strongly believe that the Kenyan Lionesses are the top in Africa. If we were able to beat South Africa twice, back-to-back, it only means that we are the best. If Kenyan fans show up in their numbers, we shall be encouraged to do our best and bring the cup home," Janet Okello told Citizen Digital.
Okello is among those who bring plenty of experience to coach Simon Odongo’s side with the others being Sheilla Chajira who has received praise from the tactician.
Lionesses Counting on Strong Mentality
"She's a mentally resilient woman. She's struggles a bit with the pace issues, maybe because she's not as fast as the rest of the group, but she will never fail to give you 100% effort," Odongo said of Chajira.
Explaining the importance of the tournament, Chajira was forthright: "This is a defining moment for Kenya. I'm carrying the weight of the nation on my shoulders. I've done it for myself, I've done it for my sisters and I've done it for my country.”
Meanwhile, Judith Auma is also chomping at the bit before the continental tournament as she remains confident of helping her country conquer Africa.
"We can't allow them to beat us at home. The girls are very ready and we are going to be the champions for this tournament," she affirmed.
The 12-team tournament has attracted 12 countries including hosts Kenya, defending champions South Africa, Uganda, Madagascar, Zambia, Tunisia, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, and Mauritius.
Kenya are staging the Rugby Africa Women's Sevens for the second time since 2014.
