Kitara thriller drags Nec up to leave Police trailing
The race for promotion to the Startimes Uganda Premier League has entered the final lane with some shake-ups at the top, as expected from the FUFA Big League games played on Thursday.
Mbarara City was on track to complete their double over Kitara but a late miracle ensured the two shared spoils.
Jude Ssemugabi gave the Ankole Lions a 2-0 lead until five minutes to the end of normal time before second-half substitute John Kisakye happened with a brace in late drama.
In Lira, Nec survived a late scare to scrap a 2-1 win over Northern Gateway through goals from Tonny Kiberu and Farouq Sekaayi.
The two results meant a tweak in the standings as Kitara remained in the lead with 48 points, which is now cut to a point by NEC who climb to second.
Mbarara City misses the chance to level at the top and now drops to third with 45 points, two ahead of Police who travel to Soroti City on Sunday for their pending game.
Only the top three will earn a promotion to the Premier League.
Kyetume moved out of danger with a 1-0 win over Jinja North United in Bugembe to stay five points clear of relegation.
Ndejje University won the Ndejje derby over Luweero United 2-0 to move out of the red zone by three points.
Kataka’s 1-all draw against Kaaro Karungi left them just above the line by a point.
