Madugu promises to fix scoring problems at WAFCON after Super Falcons’ poor group stage record
Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu has vowed to fix his team’s attacking woes ahead of their crucial quarterfinal clash against Zambia at WAFCON 2024.
Nigeria struggled to find goals in the group stage despite dominating games, raising concerns about the team’s efficiency in front of goal.
Algeria draw exposes Falcons’ biggest weakness
The Super Falcons finished their group stage campaign with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Algeria, despite recording 24 shots on goal.
It was a worrying display that highlighted Nigeria’s lack of clinical edge, especially after scraping a 1-0 win over Botswana with an 89th-minute winner.
Coach Madugu, visibly disappointed after the goalless performance, acknowledged that something had shifted within the team.
“The same players that were scoring before now are the same ones still playing, so why they’re not getting the goals is something we have to look at and work on,” he said.
Madugu promises tactical reset before Zambia showdown
With just three days to prepare for a high-stakes meeting against Zambia, Madugu assured fans that a tactical overhaul is already underway.
I asked coach Justin Madugu if he thinks the Super Falcons have a goal-scoring problem (because I think we do).

Speaking to Nigerian journalist Biola Solace-Chukwu, he said, “We have little time to work on it, but it is an area that is becoming a source of concern and worry for us.”
He added that despite previous games where goals flowed freely, this tournament has presented a different challenge.
Nigeria face Zambia at the Stade Larbi Zouli in Casablanca, with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 p.m. WAT, and the Super Falcons will be desperate to rediscover their scoring boots before it’s too late.
