Alvarez, who signed with City from River Plate in January 2022 for €17 million, has been a revelation at the Etihad Stadium.
His versatility and contributions were integral to City’s treble-winning campaign last season, which saw them secure the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.
Over the past season, Alvarez made 54 appearances, netting 19 goals and providing 13 assists.
His recent contract extension until 2028 underscored his importance to the squad and the club’s belief in his long-term potential.
Atletico Madrid’s interest in Alvarez highlights their ambition as they bolster their squad for the upcoming season.
The Argentine forward will join Atletico as their third summer signing, following the acquisitions of Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad and Alexander Sorloth from Villarreal.
With Diego Simeone at the helm, Alvarez’s arrival is expected to strengthen Atletico’s attacking options as they aim to challenge both domestically in La Liga and on the European stage.
Alvarez’s international accolades further enhance his value. He played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory and has won the Copa America twice.
His experience and pedigree will be significant assets for Atletico as they look to make an impact in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
