Megan Rapinoe misses crucial penalty, breaks down in tears as USWNT crash out

Rapinoe had the opportunity to send the United States into the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup but blazed her penalty over. 

Sweden subsequently advanced following a dramatic shootout in Melbourne.

Rapinoe, 38, came off the bench midway through the second half but was unable to deliver the decisive moment for her country, failing to keep her cool when it mattered most.

VAR intervened in dramatic fashion on Lina Hurtig's winning penalty, deeming the ball to have  crossed the line by millimeters. 

Rapinoe broke down in tears after the decision, in what will surely be her last World Cup.

Following their 6-5 shootout victory, Sweden will now face in-form Japan in the quarter-finals.
