Messi doesn't do that — Super Eagles legend names one big problem of current Nigerian team
Legendary Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh believes a lack of structure in the national team camp is a contributing factor to their current struggles, citing indiscriminate use of social media by the players.
What Oliseh said
The Super Eagles' World Cup qualification hope is hanging by a thread after too many bad and inexplicable results. Hence, the level of scrutiny is heightened.
Oliseh was recently on the Home Turf podcast where he discussed Nigeria’s struggles. The USA 94 star focused on the use of social media by the players, insisting that it was a marker of indiscipline.
“You know, it might surprise you. I don't blame these players too much,” he said. “If the structure is not there to say, ‘OK, this is how you have to behave; this is how you have to do.
“It's like one day Nigeria was playing World Cup qualifiers. And I was responding to messages on my private account on Twitter. And I saw a flash from a Nigerian player in the camp in New York who had filmed his room.
“He was showing his room on social media. Showing outside. And they were playing World Cup qualifier the next day. And I said to myself, *he cursed*, 'Oh God, forgive me for using this word.' If na me be coach, I don't decamp you that day.”
Oliseh makes point with two examples
After Oliseh’s rant, one of the co-hosts presented a different perspective. He submitted that the former Dortmund midfielder’s beliefs were probably antiquated and not in tune with the times.
Oliseh retorted, stating that the likes of Lionel Messi do not go on social media during camp. He brought his example closer to home, referencing the Senegal national team, who, in his opinion, were the most improved country since 2000. He argued that players from the West African side make themselves scarce on social media during international duty.
