Mikel Obi celebrates only Premier League goal for Chelsea

Super Eagles of Nigeria legend Mikel Obi has cause for celebration.

His beloved Chelsea side recorded a 3-0 victory away against West Ham in a Premier League London derby on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Mikel Obi needed 185 games to score his first and only Premier League goal for Chelsea.

After a lengthy transfer battle between the London Club and Manchester United FC, Obi joined Chelsea FC in 2006.

Under then-manager Jose Mourinho, Obi was moved from an attacking midfield role to a more reserved defensive midfield one.

Over his 11 years at Chelsea FC, it was uncommon to see Obi's name on the goal scorers sheet.

On September 21, 2013, in a Premier League London derby against Fulham, Obi scored a goal despite his goal drought.

That fateful day when Frank Lampard crossed the ball into the Fulham area was remembered because the midfielder was involved in a corner kick.

After that, John Terry headed the ball over the goal's face, and Obi scored with a half-volley.

The Jose Mourinho-led Chelsea FC ended a four-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory thanks to that goal in the 84th minute.

Eleven years later, he celebrated the goal on his official Instagram account with a video.
