Agba baller Oshoala's cryptic reaction to Super Falcons teammates rewards from Imo State
Former Barcelona striker and Super Falcons legend Asisat Oshoala has expressed her admiration for her Igbo teammates following the recent generous rewards from the Imo State government for their victorious return from the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, hosted a grand homecoming ceremony at the Government House in Owerri to celebrate the victory of the Super Falcons, who clinched their record-extending 10th WAFCON title in a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against Morocco.
In recognition of the significant contributions of players and technical staff from Imo State, the governor awarded each of the Imo-born players ₦30 million and a plot of land in Owerri.
Governor Uzodinma shared the joyous occasion as reported by Pulse Sports Nigeria, noting, “Here in Imo State, we were overwhelmed with joy, particularly because a significant number of our daughters proudly featured in the squad and the technical team. It was a moment of immense pride for the state.”
Among those honoured were notable Imo natives, including goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, midfielders Jennifer Echegini and Chinwendu Ihezuo, defender Osinachi Ohale, Oluchi Oluehi, and Anna Imo. Michelle Alozie was unable to attend due to commitments in the United States.
While the governor’s selective recognition has attracted criticism and accusations of bigotry for singling out only Imo-born players instead of the entire squad, Oshoala took a different stance.

Taking to Instagram, the Super Falcons’ prolific striker celebrated her teammates with an affectionate and cryptic message that read, “My Igbo sisters dey hot oo ….God abeg 🤲🏾🤲🏾 #Lagosian,” signalling pride and solidarity with her fellow Igbo players amidst the controversy.
The celebrations follow a special reception held for the Super Falcons by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, further honouring the team’s remarkable achievement.
Despite some backlash over regional favouritism, the homecoming in Imo State shone a spotlight on the contributions of local talent within Nigeria’s victorious squad and highlighted ongoing regional pride in the landmark success of the Super Falcons.
