The NBA's in-season competition has returned, although with a new name: the NBA Cup.
The concept is the same, even if the NBA Cup is now called that: make some regular season games into a competition for a European soccer-style cup in order to generate interest in a portion of the season when casual viewers' attention is mostly focused on football.
It was successful the previous year since tournament games were typically played with greater vigor than regular-season games, much to the delight of ardent supporters.
Attracting notice was the arrangement of the games on what is now known as "Cup Nights," when each game was a component of the cup and was played on designated courts.
Ratings and fan interest were positively impacted by LeBron James and the Lakers winning the first title all the way.
The cup chase for the upcoming season begins on November 12 with group stage games, and cup evenings continue until December 3. Each side will play four group games against the teams they were drawn with.
The final four in Las Vegas and the championship game on December 17 will mark the conclusion of the regular season for the top four teams in each conference, which consists of the three group winners and one wild card.
