Ndidi set to get new coach as Leicester City part ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy
Super Eagles star Wilfred Ndidi is set to get a new coach as his club Leicester City have confirmed the departure of manager Ruud van Nistelrooy by mutual agreement, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2024/25 season.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker took charge of the Foxes in November 2024, inheriting a side languishing in 16th place.
Despite a promising start, Van Nistelrooy failed to spark a turnaround, with Leicester ultimately finishing 18th, 13 points adrift of safety, and dropping back into the Championship just two years after their dramatic escape in 2023.
Van Nistelrooy’s brief tenure saw just five wins, despite early optimism that the Dutchman could inject much-needed stability and attacking flair.
His appointment came after he led PSV Eindhoven to a KNVB Cup title, followed by a stint as an assistant coach at Manchester United under Erik Ten Hag, before briefly serving as interim boss at Old Trafford.
What Leicester City said
In a statement released on Friday, the club confirmed the decision to part ways with Van Nistelrooy.
“Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the club. He moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at Leicester City for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future," the statement read.
Van Nistelrooy appreciates Leicester City
In his farewell message, Van Nistelrooy expressed gratitude to the club.
He said, “I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club.”
Leicester faces a critical summer ahead as they aim to rebuild and bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
