NEC FC Provide Update on Richard Basangwa After Scary Throat Injury in UPL Match
NEC FC has issued a reassuring update on the condition of forward Richard Basangwa, who is now stable after sustaining a severe throat injury during a Uganda Premier League match on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the 90th minute of a goalless draw against Express FC at Nakivubo Stadium. Basangwa was struck in the neck by an apparent elbow from Express defender Glory Kisule, leading to his immediate distress.
In a statement released Wednesday, NEC FC confirmed that Basangwa was rushed to Case Clinic, where he underwent a CT scan. The results came back negative, indicating no serious internal injuries.
"A paracetamol infusion was administered and a CT scan was promptly carried out," the club stated. "The CT scan results came back negative, ruling out any serious internal damage. His condition has since improved significantly. He is now able to breathe more comfortably and can speak in a low but clear tone."
Basangwa was kept overnight for observation and was scheduled for a follow-up consultation with an ENT specialist. The club added, "If the specialist finds no further complications, he is expected to be discharged."
Details of the On-Field Incident
Following the dangerous foul in the final minute of regulation time, Basangwa fell to the ground showing clear signs of distress, struggling to breathe and speak. Referee Joshua Duula immediately stopped the match, awarded a foul, and issued a red card to Kisule for the challenge.
Medical teams quickly entered the pitch to provide aid as Basangwa remained on the ground for several minutes, appearing to lose consciousness at one point.
The emergency response was complicated by the absence of a properly equipped ambulance at the stadium. Reports suggest the on-site ambulance lacked essential medical equipment and had a flat tire, forcing officials to find an alternative.
Ultimately, a Toyota Land Cruiser was brought onto the field, and the injured player was carefully placed inside before being transported to Case Hospital for urgent medical care.
