Nigeria 5-0 Zambia: Five-star Super Falcons run riot, melt Copper girls to reach WAFCON semis

The Super Falcons delivered a breathtaking performance in Casablanca, crushing Zambia’s Copper Queens 5-0 to secure their place in the semi-finals of WAFCON 2024.

Nigeria’s queens of the pitch made an emphatic statement of intent with this dominant victory, showcasing attacking variety and defensive solidity.

The scoring spree began lightning-fast. Just three minutes into the encounter, the Super Falcons struck, setting the tone for a relentless attacking display.

Esther Okoronkwo was the star of the night, scoring twice, including her first goal of the tournament in the 33rd minute.

Chinwendu Ihezuo extended the lead to 3-0 with a clinical finish in first-half stoppage time, capitalizing on a defensive error from Zambia, giving Nigeria a commanding advantage at the break.

The floodgates opened further in the second half. Tosin Demehin powered in a header in the 68th minute to put the game completely out of reach.

The emphatic victory was rounded off by Ijamilusi’s goal deep into added time, sealing a comprehensive 5-0 win.

Goals from Ohale, Okoronkwo, and Ihezuo put Nigeria comfortably in control early on, combining clinical finishing with tactical discipline. 

Nigeria’s defence, marshalled by the likes of Ohale and Demehin, maintained a clean sheet, further cementing their status as a formidable side, having yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

Nigeria’s coach Justine Madugu had emphasised mental preparedness heading into the contest, and the team delivered on all fronts, blending physicality with flair to outclass a talented Copper Queens side.

With this impressive win, the Super Falcons are now firmly in the hunt for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, tagged Mission X.
