The Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup were left in tatters after a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Bloemfontein on Tuesday September 9.

What Happened?

Eric Chelle’s side needed victory to stay alive in the qualification race but failed to deliver.

The result leaves Nigeria out of mathematical contention for the World Cup, for a second consecutive edition.

Angry reactions flood social media

The backlash was swift and fierce.

Nigerian influencer Àgbà John Doe delivered one of the harshest responses on social media. 

On X, he wrote: 'The Nigerian government should not pay the Super Eagles any match bonuses for their woeful performance. They should disband the entire team, and build a new team. They can go and become Instagram celebrities. Very indisciplined team. End.'

His comments echoed the frustrations of millions of fans who have endured a series of poor displays in the qualifiers. 

Social media was flooded with similar complaints, with many questioning Chelle’s tactical decisions and the team’s overall commitment.

The issue of match bonuses has long been sensitive in Nigerian football, with disputes over unpaid allowances regularly making headlines during past tournaments.

With qualification now out of reach, the immediate question is what comes next for the Super Eagles. 

Coach Eric Chelle faces mounting pressure, with critics calling for a total rebuild of the squad.
