Nneka Ogwumike sets record, outshine Onyenwere as Los Angeles Sparks beat Phoenix Mercury

American basketball player of Nigerian descent Nneka Ogwumike had 21 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists as the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Phoenix Mercury, 99-93, in overtime early on Saturday, June 3, 2023.

With 1:03 remaining in overtime, Lexie Brown made her third 3-pointer of the game to increase the Sparks' advantage to 95-91. 

Jordin Canada led the Sparks (2-2), who also defeated Phoenix in their season debut two weeks ago, with 16 points and five assists in the game. 

For the Sparks, who welcome Seattle to their home court on Saturday night, Layshia Clarendon added 11 points.

Phoenix  was led by Brittney Griner's 24 points and 11 rebounds. Sophie Cunningham and Taurasi each contributed 19 points.

American professional basketball player of Nigerian descent, Michaela Onyenwere, contributed 10 points, one assist, one block, and five assists.

In 28 minutes of action, Onyenewere, who joined the Mercury on a trade, made four of her nine shots and was two of five from three-point range.

American professional basketball player of Nigerian descent, Chiney Ogwumike, put up two points, three rebounds, one block, two assists, and one steal.

She made just one of six shots from the field and missed both three point attempts in 21 minutes of action.

Nneka Ogwumike made history by becoming the all-time steal leader for the Los Angeles Sparks.

Ogwumike contributed 21 points, 12 rebounds, one steal, and six assists.

In 40 minutes of action,  she made seven of 15 shots, and was seven of eight from the free throw line.
