Nottingham Forest to sign Chris Wood as cover for Taiwo Awoniyi
Nottingham Forest are close to the signing of Newcastle striker Chris Wood as they aim to avoid Premier League relegation.
Forest were the busiest club in the summer, signing over 15 players following their promotion to the English top flight.
Tricky Trees to add Wood to the Forest
The Reds have continued their spending spree this winter, with the signing of Brazilian full-back Danilo from Palmeiras.
However, they are not done in the transfer market yet as they are set to bring in Wood from Newcastle.
According to The Athletic, Forest will sign Wood on an initial six-month loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season. Wood is currently on the books of Newcastle, having joined the Magpies last January.
However, the New Zealand striker has failed to justify his transfer fee and has struggled for regular game time this season. Wood has played just 221 minutes of Premier League football for Newcastle this season, scoring just two goals.
Wood to serve as a cover for Awoniyi
As a result, Wood has decided to leave St James Park this month for City Ground for more playing time. Wood will join Forest as a potential cover for Taiwo Awoniyi, who is likely to miss the next two months.
Awoniyi is currently injured with a groin injury he picked up in the match against Southampton, and he is not expected to return until March. However, Wood’s arrival will ensure that Forest are not short up front.
The 31-year-old will also aim to help Forest preserve their Premier League status. Steve Cooper’s men are currently 13th with 20 points from 19 games.
